Food Bank

Begun as a response to the needs of rough-sleepers in Mid Devon, CHAT’s Food Bank has grown to become one of our best-supported outreaches to the local community, with collecting boxes in supermarkets and in churches and schools.

People need help with food for many different reasons, here are just a few:

  • Family Breakdown
  • Changes to Benefits
  • Delay in Benefits
  • Unexpected Financial Crisis
  • Fluctuating Agency Work
  • Fuel Poverty
  • Between Jobs
  • Homelessness
  • Health Problems (Mental & Physical)

Agencies such as Children’s Centres, the CAB and the local Council can refer people in need to us via a voucher system.
I cannot thank you enough for your support. I feel very supported and in good hands. I still cannot believe that you organised this shopping which was full of the things I would buy normally. I got the shopping home, unpacked it and just cried. Just having this food to live off for the next week had made a huge difference.”                                                    Beneficiary of the scheme

Winter Fuel Poverty Scheme
Fuel poverty is a very real issue for many in Mid Devon, particularly in the rural areas.  More than 1 in 10 Mid Devon households are described as being in fuel poverty.

Our scheme has been running annually throughout the winter months since 2012. We run a voucher system to support Mid Devon clients with prepayment meters whose keys can be charged via a local retailer.  We also signpost clients to other sources of help, both financial and practical, where appropriate.

We host a Tuesday morning energy-efficiency clinic in our Hub, provided by Tara from ECOE.
She has saved £1000 s for local people with her energy-saving advice and support.
She can:
• Refer to Income Max – a benefit and debt advice service
• Help with Energy Savings Trust applications
• Help with replacing old-fashioned electric storage heaters and boilers
• Replace lightbulbs with LEDs
• Fit draught-excluders
• And more!
You can just drop in when she’s in CHAT or phone 07731 540215 to book an appointment.
